5/29/2023 0 Comments Come tumbling down bookMy own method, it seems, is all about keeping myself off-kilter during the plotting process. If they know what’s coming, there’s a good chance they’ll put down your book and move on to something else. The best bit of that advice, and one I would take to heart as a novelist, is the idea of keeping your readers off kilter whenever possible. Sometimes I slap my forehead with the ruler, just so the lesson would sink in. Whenever I needed a reminder, I’d take out the ruler and read this sentence again. I liked this advice so much that I printed it out and taped it to the back of a wooden ruler that I kept in my desk drawer. Make it funny, make it dark, keep the body count in the low double digits, liberally coat with lotsa Philly ambiance, keep the surprises coming (never let the reader get too comfortable, keep ‘em off kilter whenever possible) and you might just have a winner on your hands. Did Gary have any advice? (He’d edited hundreds of them over the years.) He wrote back: During one e-mail exchange I admitted that I was working on a crime novel. Before I’d published my first novel, I wrote two nonfiction books for an editor named Gary Goldstein.

Kaur’s fantasy evaporates and reality strikes, leaving her with the reality that love is not easy, resulting in a breakup by the end of the chapter. The next stage is named “the breaking” where the love she had turns into something toxic. This fantasy transforms into a type of love she now knows that is filled with joy, support, and pleasure, which differs greatly from her past. Because the only “love” Kaur had ever known involved abuse and fear, she begins writing about a fantasy type of love. The next stage in her book is titled “the loving”. The text and images incorporated in the book describe the sexual, emotional, and physical abuse she suffered. This abstract portrayal of her life begins in “the hurting,” which consists of abuse she as a child and her mother faced that was bestowed upon them by her father. Rupi Kaur’s Milk and Honey free verse poetry novel consists of experiences of Kaur’s life in stages progressing from hurting to healing. 5/29/2023 0 Comments John bogle little bookTrying to beat the stock market is theoretically a zero-sum game (for every winner, there must be a loser), but after the substantial costs of investing are deducted, it becomes a loser’s game. Owning a diversified portfolio of stocks and holding it for the long term is a winner’s game. ” – Warren Buffett, Chairman of Berkshire Hathaway, 2014 Annual Shareholder Letter. Most advisors, however, are far better at generating high fees than they are at generating high returns. “There are a few investment managers, of course, who are very good – though in the short run, it’s difficult to determine whether a great record is due to luck or talent. 5/29/2023 0 Comments Nena by Ann BoelterHe gave it a cursory stir with the long wooden ladle, then tested the broth with his finger. Sigurd moved quickly to the pot suspended over the fire before she could change her mind. You drink a cup of broth and I’ll tell you who he was.” He looked at her fondly and shook his head. “The healer says it’s my stubbornness that’s kept me alive this long,” she countered, ignoring his gruffness. “The healer says you shouldn’t waste so much energy being stubborn,” he grumbled. “You never could lie to me, Sigurd, so why would you try now?” Leila chided him. “No one? I recognized his voice, so I know he’s been here before.” She seemed paler than usual this morning. “Are you cold? Would you like something to eat?” He moved to the bed and bent over to adjust the furs around her. “No.” Sigurd closed the door behind him and made his way through the interior of the small cabin to stoke the fire. “You don’t have to creep I’m awake.” Leila’s quiet voice came from the shadows. When a new monster emerges from the shadows-one who feeds on chaos and brings out its victim’s inner demons-it lures Kate home, where she finds more than she bargained for. In Verity, August has become the leader he never wished to be, and in Prosperity, Kate has become the ruthless hunter she knew she could be. This moment leads to a rollercoaster of reveals, including the fact that Helly is actually Helena Eagan, descendant of company founder Kier Eagan Irving is investigating Lumon on his own and Mark’s innie now knows that his dead wife may not be as gone as he thought.Īll of this is followed by what is perhaps the most aggressive cliffhanger in the last five years. We kick off the Season 1 finale with Dylan (Zach Cherry) enacting the overtime protocol so Helly (Britt Lower), Irving (John Turturro) and Mark (Adam Scott) can take over their bodies while outside of the facility to try to get a glimpse of their lives and and gather hints as to what Lumon may be up to. But it’s also the type of show that leaves us with endless questions and a finale that most certainly needs some explanation.
